It is likely that preparations were made by providing the convicts with buckets and tins - this was certainly done on emigrant ships - but with the rolling of the ship, these were flung around and contributed little to keeping the prison clean. And since the crew were fully engaged in taking the ship to sea, there was no prospect of the prison being cleaned immediately, one of the unfortunate but unavoidable features of a convict voyage.
