Background

The ships' logs are one of the most important sources of information about the voyages to and from New South Wales. A complete set of logs survives (in the Admiralty records at the UK National Archives) for the outward voyage of the First Fleet, but none for the Second or Third Fleets. Where the Botany Baymen were taken up by the East India Company, journals are usually preserved in the India Office Records at the British Library. Apart from these sources, only a handful of logs have survived.
